A study by scientists at the University of Colorado Boulder suggests that ice sheets may be hundreds of meters thick at the poles of the Moon , a legacy of its volcanic past.
Andrew Wilcoski, lead author of the paper published in May in The Planetary Science Journal , stated that they believe there is water on the Moon. Wilcoski thinks that billions of years ago , glaciers formed at the poles of the Moon and could be used as a source of water.
The team used various computer simulations to investigate the effects of volcanoes . Models reveal that volcanoes release water vapor during eruption, which turns into ice. Researchers liken this phenomenon to the formation of thin layers of ice on the water after a cold night.
The University estimates that 41 percent of the water from volcanoes turns into ice and settles at the Moon’s poles. In 2020, NASA announced that there is definitely water on our satellite. It is known that there is water on the satellite, but there are still questions about the amount and where it came from.
If the computer simulations are correct, it could be thick layers of ice trapped in craters under the lunar soil . This water is said to be used to drink or to make rocket fuel . However, we will only be able to learn that there is water on the Moon with the help of robots and human explorers.
NASA will send the Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover (VIPER) spacecraft to the Moon in 2023. This tool will search for these deposits in the Moon’s south polar circle . It is expected to provide important information to scientists with the new data collected by spacecraft.
